Brave Browser – Introduction

The web, as it currently works, is broken. Just think of this: When you visit a webpage, news site, for example, remember as the hassle you have to go through to read the news, the thing you wanted, and the site was supposed to serve.

At first, you will feel that the page is taking a lot longer to load than it should have. If there were just the relevant images and text-only, the size of most webpages lies between some hundred Kilobytes to few Megabytes. But even on high-speed internet, it sometimes takes around 5-10x longer than it should have. The main culprit for this lag are trackers and the ads. You may have heard about Facebook and Google trackers but there are a whole lot more of them.

There are trackers that literally track your each and every move on the web such as your cursor movement, how fast or slow you scroll, which part of the page you pay more attention to, which link you click, and many more.

These trackers are loaded from third-party sites and since they have to transfer data back and forth for things like displaying customized ads, it takes a long time for them to fully load. You have to waste a lot of valuable time waiting for something that is a privacy nightmare and has no additional value to you.

After your page fully loads, there comes an “Accept Cookies” button due to EU’s law. You accept the cookies policies but the real problem then begins.

An irrelevant video starts auto-playing out of nowhere, sometimes with loud volume. Many times, it is very hard to stop and close the video as the mini-player video keeps moving.

And then there are ads. Ads everywhere. Sidebars, middle of the content, at the bottom, etc. Let’s not forget intrusive ads that open in the new tab. Ugh!

You must be insanely lucky to get the privilege of getting away from the website without “This website wants to send you notifications” or “Subscribe to our newsletter” popup box.

This frustrating experience on the web is what led to Brendan Eich, co-founder of Mozilla Firefox and creator of JavaScript, to develop a new privacy-focused browser called Brave in 2015.

Brave Features

1. Ads and Trackers Blocking

Brave browser has a built-in ad and tracking blocker which are the most effectively implemented among all the major browsers. Brave doesn’t allow any ads in the name of “Acceptable Ads” as some browser extensions do.

Blocking Ads and trackers not only saves your privacy but also decreases the loading time of the websites by a huge margin. Depending upon how many trackers and ads a website has, brave loads the web page up to 6 times faster than normal browsers.

The main difference between any other ad blockers and brave is that: Brave doesn’t want to hurt the website developers too. Instead, it wants to lead a privacy-friendly way of revenue generation where content creators can make money and the users also get their fair share. So, the Brave team introduced Brave rewards.

2. Brave Rewards

Brave browser is the only browser that gives you rewards for using it. The reward is paid in terms of Basic Attention Token(BAT). BAT is built on top of Ethereum and you can donate the BATs you earn to your favorite website, YouTube content creator, or you can exchange with Fiat currency and use it for yourself.

There are two main ways you can earn BATS:

  1. Earn BATs by viewing ads while using the Brave browser(Easy method).
  2. Earn BATs by referring brave browser(Higher earning, Up to $7.5/referral).

3. Super Fast Browsing Experience

Brave blocks all the ads, trackers, and other unnecessary things that you don’t need that results a blazing fast browsing experience—Up to 6 times faster.

4. Save Battery and Data Usage

As the browser don’t have to load unnecessary items a lot of data and time is saved. This results to longer battery life.

5. Private Browsing with Tor Enabled

You don’t have to download separate Tor browser to browse privately as brave comes with tor enabled.
